  • Bird of Paradise

    Ada Leverson

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Aug. 23, 2016)
POOR Madeline came into the room a little flustered and hustled, with papers in her muff. She found Bertha looking lovely and serene as usual. Madeline Irwin was a modern-looking girl of twenty-three; tall, thin, smart and just the right shape; not pretty, but very sympathetic, with thick dark hair and strongly marked eyebrows, a rather long and narrow face, delicately modelled, a clear white complexion, and soft, sincere brown eyes. Bertha—Mrs. Percy Kellynch—was known as a beauty. She was indeed improbably pretty, small, plump and very fair, with soft golden hair that was silky and yet fluffy, perfectly regular little features, and a kind of infantine sweetness, combined with an almost incredible cleverness that was curious and fascinating. She was of a type remote equally from the fashion-plate and the suffragette, and was so physically attractive that one could hardly be near her without longing to put out a finger and touch her soft, fair face or her soft hair; as one would like to touch a kitten or a pretty child. And yet one felt that it would not be an entirely safe thing to do; like the child or the kitten she might scratch or run away. But it is probable that a large average of her acquaintance had been weak enough—or strong enough—to give way to the temptation and take the risk.

Hardcover (HMH Books for Young Readers, Aug. 26, 2002)
We were so far away from any life we’d known. I wondered if we’d gone beyond God’s reach. Perhaps He couldn’t hear us from this wild land.Next to the immense forest of eastern Canada lies the tiny wild Isle of Demons. In 1542 the young Marguerite, her maid, and her love are marooned on this island. At first, summer provides berries, greens, mushrooms, and rabbits and squirrels caught by snares. The exiles become increasingly resourceful, scavenging for food in the woods and on the shore, using every part of a slain deer—its blood for pudding, its bladder for a water bag, and its hide for clothing. They even build a home of sorts out of saplings and mud. But though it is little spoken of, Marguerite dreads the harsh northern winter to come. How will they ever survive it? Based on the true-life heroine Marguerite de La Rocque, Paradise is a gripping novel of adventure, courage, hardship, love, and survival.

The action takes place in the Meeting Hall of the oldest church on Harbor Island, a small fictional island somewhere on the eastern seaboard. The members of an amateur theater group are joined briefly by a professional, and this changes all of their lives. Lawrence Wood visits his hometown for the first time in years and winds up directing and starring in an original zany musical based on Chekhov's The Seagull by Homer, the youngest member of the group. As they work together, Wood changes Homer's script and his life. He also becomes involved with Julia, the spirited young woman Homer loves. As the amateurs approach opening night, their personal lives begin to mirror the plot twist of Homer's adaption of The Seagull in increasingly comic ways. At dress rehearsal, just as Homer announces that he has rewritten the ending, Wood reveals that he's been offered a part on Broadway. He leaves, sending the group into turmoil until they discover Homer's new ending, and how much they mean to each other.
